14-17 April ::
The Daylight Atheist by Tom Scott at the Suter Theatre 7.30 pm. Tickets $25
Early bird discount of $5 if booked and paid for by 14 April
This is the story of Dan Moffat, a man who reveals himself as a right bastard: an unrepentant alcoholic, neglectful of his family when he is not being downright sadistic, self-pitying, egocentric, violent and incapable of introspection. Despite this – and given what he reveals, this is a considerable feat – it is impossible not to feel empathy for him, even at times to like him. The portrayal of Moffat is a knife-edge balancing act which exposes the character’s flaws without ever dehumanising him or excusing his actions.
1-3, 7-10 July ::
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Dale Wasseman at the Theatre Royal 7.30 pm Tickets $25
Early bird discount of $5 if booked and paid for by 1 July
Set in the mental ward of a hospital, the central character, McMurphy, fights a futile battle to liberate his fellow patients from the psychological and emotional controls exerted by Nurse Ratched. She ultimately wins – it could end no other way – but at a cost which diminishes her absolute control over her patients.
Four Flat Whites in Italy by Roger Hall 26 -28 August, 1-4 September at the Theatre Royal 7.30 pm Tickets $25
Early bird discount of $5 if booked and paid for by 26 August
Roger Hall’s latest Kiwi comedy sees retired couples Alison and Adrian, and Harry and his new wife Judy taking an Italian trip of a lifetime. Comical calamities befall the intrepid travellers as they valiantly negotiate the pitfalls of an Italian OE. Roger Hall, our most popular playwright, deftly satirises our manners, morals, loves and lusts with wry humour, astute observation and legendary one-liners.
11-13, 16-20 November::
Blood Brothers by Willy Russell at the Theatre Royal 7.30 pm Tickets $45
Early bird discount of $10 if booked and paid for by 11 November
Set in Liverpool in the 1960’s, this is one of the longest-running works of musical theatre in history. It tells the story of two fraternal twins who are separated at birth. One brother is raised in a family of great privilege, the other in a family of great poverty. Even with their different socioeconomic backgrounds, the two boys end up becoming great friends until a misunderstanding leads to a tragic ending.
Tickets may be purchased through Everyman Records or at the theatre door.
